Chinese ambassador says U.S. forced sale of TikTok operations as economic persecution

Chinese Ambassador to the European Union (EU) Zhang Ming denounced the US over forcing ByteDance to sell TikTok in the US for national security reasons. "Economic persecution" includes attacks on the EU's deprivation of Huawei Technologies, citing the unfair practice of governments in the Western Hemisphere to stem China's rise.

Mr. Zhang told Bloomberg Television that What happened to TiKTok in the US is an attempted takeover by coercion. While some US politicians try to create a purge network on the grounds of legitimacy and of reciprocity. This action has no goal other than economic persecution.

Zhang's comments reflected the retaliation from the Chinese government. Previously, China has condemned the US for its attacks on Huawei without clear evidence. And most recently, the Chinese government has called forcing the sale of TikTok a "theft for national sanctions".

Trump has ordered Bydance to sell its TikTok business in the US over concerns about its handling of the privacy of its users, with TikTok, the popular short-video app. It has about 100 million monthly active users in the US.
